Your Voice is the Secret: 7 Ways to Use Your Voice Effectively (Without Yelling)

Show Notes:

It was only when I started podcasting that I realized how when our voices are isolated, you can literally feel everything that I’m feeling because there are no other senses to rely on – there’s nowhere to hide.

If I’m feeling truly happy, you can hear it in my voice, and if I feel confident, you know it – also when I feel embarrassed or horrified – there’s no way to hide the feelings.

So it’s funny, the idea for this episode actually originated on a little getaway trip to Gatlinburg in the fall when my husband and I were in the car for hours, and he made me listen to one of my own episodes because he wanted to hear it.

(He's adorable, he's my biggest fan and has literally listened to every single episode I've ever recorded).

I NEVER listen to my own podcasts. πŸ™„ I hear about movie stars never wanting to watch their own movies, and I get it. It's horrible. It reminds me way too much of what it felt like to have to record my lessons as a student teacher and have to listen to all of those horrible "uhms" I said about 463 times in a half hour.

As we listened, my husband said out loud, "You're so easy to listen to." And I laughed and said, "Well, my students taught me that."

When he asked me what I meant, it made me think about the many ways I started to pay more attention to how I was using my voice to master classroom management over my years of teaching.

We don’t realize (at least I didn’t as a new teacher), how truly powerful our voices are and that what we do with our voices directly impacts our students’ behavior... and the overall tone of our classroom.

Inside this episode, you will learn:

  • What happened when I finally learned the power of the pause.

  • What I finally discovered about why my students were such terrible listeners.

  • The fastest and most simplistic way to eliminate "ummms," "mkays" and "so" from your speech. This one was a game-changer for me!

  • What's much more powerful than raising your voice, even though it might be counter-intuitive.

  • My favorite strategy of all-time for getting my students' attention quickly and easily while shifting the energy to be super positive inside my classroom.

  • The most effective way to use your voice to build instant connection with your students.

I truly hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. Remember, you do not need to do any of this alone. Ask to join our private Beginning Teacher Talk Facebook group  and become part of the most supportive new teacher group on the internet!

And until next week, remember: just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
