Show Notes:
Which subject are you least excited to teach? Is it writing? If so, you are in good company! Many new (and experienced) teachers find teaching writing to be challenging. So if you are just starting out and you're nervous to teach writing, then this episode is for you, my friend. Sara Marye of The Stellar Teacher Company is joining me to give you some amazing advice for teaching writing in a manageable way.
Sara Marye has over a decade of experience working as a classroom teacher and school administrator. She is now CEO of The Stellar Teacher Company and a literacy specialist passionate about helping elementary teachers grow their students into lifelong readers and writers. Sara’s mission is to make teachers’ lives a little easier by providing them with endless encouragement, effective strategies, and engaging no-fluff resources.
As a new teacher, it is so helpful to get some insight from an experienced teacher (or a literacy specialist like Sara) on how to effectively teach writing in an actual classroom setting, which is something many college teacher prep programs don’t give you.
We often feel this pressure to go quickly and make each writing lesson be a whole writers’ workshop, which just isn’t feasible for most of us! Sara is breaking down how to make teaching writing simple and bite-sized so you can meet your students where they are and help them make great progress without the overwhelm.
Sara is breaking down 3 reasons that teaching writing is such a challenge and what mistakes she made when teaching writing so you can avoid making the same mistakes. She is also sharing simple ideas for how to increase the effectiveness in their writing instruction, the importance of slowing down the process, and her advice for new teachers.
Sara shares how important having routines for writing lessons is, and you know I love a good routine. If you’d like to learn more about how to set up routines in your classroom and other ways to get your classroom prepared for the school year, check out the R.E.A.D.Y. for School Academy. Can’t wait to see you inside!
I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
