Show Notes:

Maintaining focus, whether as a student or as the teacher, can be extremely challenging in the classroom. Whether it’s redirecting students during a lesson, someone asking to use the restroom during a read aloud, the phone ringing while giving instructions, or the unexpected sound of the fire alarm, interruptions are a constant in the classroom. And since they’re not going away, it’s our job as teachers to learn how to continue teaching with interruptions.

After hearing from teachers how frustrating this can be, I wanted to provide you with two different ways you can start dealing with the constant stream of interruptions during the school day. So in today’s episode, I’m going to share some very concrete strategies and a few mindset reminders that will keep you teaching and your students focused when interruptions occur.

As you all know, I’m very mindset-focused and believe that by getting your mind right, you’re better equipped to deal with challenging situations. I first start by sharing how to establish a mindset of flexibility and resilience and some practical ways you can adapt and adjust throughout the day. Additionally, I provide practical strategies that help streamline students’ response to frequent interruptions that include visual cues, designating student roles, and backup activities.

Interruptions are just a part of teaching, but by taking some time to prepare for them, they don’t have to derail your entire day. After implementing some flexible systems discussed in this episode, you can keep your students focused, manage your own energy, and keep the learning going no matter what interruptions occur!

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • Some common interruptions teachers face and various ways to keep students focused
  • Why establishing a flexible and resilient mindset is so important to managing your own energy when interruptions occur
  • A reminder that building stamina in students is a skill set and how you can implement focus activities in your classroom
  • Examples of routines and visual cues you can use to help regain focus in your students

I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
