I’ve made it my mission to help beginning teachers with their classroom management through effective resources, activities, and lessons. And while I’ve shared with you a variety of ways to manage your classroom, the secret to classroom management is student engagement.

When I was a young teacher, I believed two things about student engagement: kids would automatically be interested in what I was teaching and the role was on the kids, not the teacher. Well, I turned out to be wrong! I realized that if I wanted my students to be engaged, I needed to ignite their spark of curiosity for learning.

In last week’s episode, I started this series on sharing ideas for creative strategies for ultimate student engagement, and in today’s episode, I’m going to continue with more ideas surrounded by one overarching idea: student-led lessons. Now, this doesn’t mean you hand over your classroom to students for the day, but small parts of a lesson that increases student empowerment and reinforcement of behaviors.

Student-led lessons and peer teaching are so incredibly powerful, for they help mitigate games in learning, aid in differentiation of support, and cement understanding of concepts for students. Since this idea might be new, I provide seven examples of how to effectively use this in your classroom that ultimately increases student engagement.

With no materials, these creative strategies for student engagement rely on their peers, personal interests, and connections from school to their personal lives to keep them active and involved in the lesson. Additionally, these strategies offer a different way of thinking about how you can approach content and getting students involved and engaged in your lessons through focused conversations.
