Part of our job as teachers is to get students’ attention as we transition from one activity to the next, line up from recess, or give further instructions when students are working in groups. And for most of us, our natural instinct to get the attention of our class is by yelling or speaking in a louder tone. I’ll admit, I was guilty of this at the beginning of my career, but I soon realized that the sound of my voice didn’t have to be loud in order to be powerful. 

I speak heavily about classroom management on this podcast and the various strategies you can implement in order to create an effective and successful classroom. But the one tool I have never shared about, yet is equally as powerful, is the use of your voice. Over the years I learned that the tone and volume of my voice directly impacted my students’ behavior and overall tone of the classroom, which therefore, affected my classroom management. 

In my first few years of teaching, I didn’t have the tools and strategies that we talk about here on the podcast to prevent myself from defaulting to yelling to get my students’ attention. However, I learned over time more effective ways to get their attention quickly without yelling. In today’s episode, I’m sharing seven strategies you can start using in your classroom that don’t involve you yelling. Instead, you’ll be able to start using your voice as a powerful tool to manage your classroom more effectively.
