How to Support Your Speech & Language Students with Hallie Sherman

Show Notes:

As classroom teachers, we are the people spending the most time with our students during the school day. As a result, we’re often the ones who are first to notice that a student is struggling in some way and may need additional support in that area.

An example of this would be a child’s speech and language development. If you notice that something is a bit ‘off’, you may not know where to start when it comes to getting that student the support that they need. Your school SLP, speech language pathologist, is a great place to start!

When we see a student struggling, we often feel like it’s our fault and that we need to have all the answers, but I want to encourage you to lean on the staff at your school to help. When it comes to speech and language, there are so many elements to consider, and your school’s SLP has the skill set required to determine if a student needs their services.

Our guest today, Hallie Sherman, is here to provide so much great information about speech and language. She’s sharing which skills are associated with speech and language, what to look out for in your students, how you can collaborate with an SLP, what you can do in your classroom to support these students, and so much more.

Hallie is a licensed speech and language pathologist working full time in a public school in New York. She currently works with fifth and sixth grade students, but has experience working with preschool all the way up to high school students.

She is also the CEO behind Speech Time Fun and host of the SLP Coffee Talk podcast. Through her podcast, blog, and TPT store, Hallie helps SLPs working with older students plan with ease and confidence.

There are so many incredible takeaways from my conversation with Hallie.  During our discussion, I had some flashbacks to students I worked with over the years. I realized it's possible that what I thought were children who just weren't following directions could have actually had an auditory processing delay, and would have benefited from speech and language services. We just don't know for sure because it's not our area of expertise. You may have the same reaction!

I hope that this helps to clarify the role of an SLP and encourages you to reach out to them, or your admin, to see what kind of support is available.

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • The general role of the SLP (speech language pathologist) in schools.
  • Clues for teachers to look for that might give insight as to whether or not a student may need additional support.
  • A typical process for referring or connecting with an SLP.
  • Why a student might not qualify for school services, and the many factors that go into that decision.
  • Practical ways that you can support students in your classroom who are struggling in speech and language.
  • Best ways to collaborate with the school SLP when you both have very busy schedules.

I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
