Show Notes:
Do you take your school work home every weekend? Do you check work emails in the evenings? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you may think it’s not even possible to stop doing these things. You may also find it challenging to get any real planning done during contracted hours.
As teachers, the lines behind work time and personal time can get very blurry very quickly…even after the back-to-school craziness has come and gone.
If you feel like you’re working 24/7, then you’re going to love hearing from today’s guest, Stephanie Palovchik. She really knows a thing or two about productivity and honing in on systems so that the overwhelm doesn't last you all year long.
Stephanie Palovchik is a productivity expert for elementary teachers, and the founder of Teaching Little Leaders. She’s also a Kindergarten teacher and the host of The Teacher Time Podcast. Stephanie helps lower elementary teachers get planned and prepped during the school day with simple time management strategies and easy-to-use templates.
As a toddler mama, full time Kindergarten teacher, and resource creator, she knows that busy teachers like you need solid systems so they can feel less overwhelmed and more present in their day to day lives. Stephanie helps teachers lean into their unique abilities to engage students so they can spend less time prepping activities and more time doing the best part of their job - teaching students!
Stephanie and I discuss how important it is to figure out ways to streamline and systematize your routines, whether you're a beginning teacher or veteran teacher. This doesn’t always come easily, especially combined with everything else you’re learning at the beginning of the year.
My hope is that you can take the advice and strategies discussed in this episode to set yourself up for success and hit the ground running this year. Stephanie will walk you through her four productivity pillars that will help you manage your thoughts, leverage your prep time, and organize and implement systems that will work well for you long-term.
We want to help you avoid experiencing teacher burnout. Your career as a teacher doesn’t have to consume your entire life. Understanding this now will serve you for years to come. It took me reaching complete exhaustion to realize that I needed to give myself a break at nights and on the weekends. I found that when I spent less time working, I was actually a better teacher.
When I took breaks, I was refreshed, happier, and more creative. It all starts with asking yourself, What if I don’t? What if I could actually be a great teacher without responding to emails 24/7 and taking papers home to grade every night? If you're willing to challenge yourself in this way, I think you’ll come to the same realization that I did.
Inside this week's show, you'll learn:
I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
