You’ve just graduated from your education program, spent weeks student teaching, landed your first teaching job, and now you’re spending all summer setting up your classroom and preparing for a great first year of teaching. All of that sounds amazing, doesn’t it? You’ve excelled in every step of this process, so you should be filled with confidence heading into the first day of school, right?

For most first-year teachers, that answer would be no. Even though first-year teachers have gained all this knowledge and practical experience, there still seems to be a lack of confidence in new teachers. And honestly, that’s totally understandable. Whether you’re starting something new or embarking on a new career path, it’s only natural to feel nervous and less confident.

But despite it being a natural feeling, I want to make sure you know how to increase your new teacher confidence so you’re ready for the first day of school. So, in part nine of the series, I’m sharing ways to build your confidence as a new teacher. In each of my seven ideas, they each focus on the different aspects of teaching. They range from a classroom management plan, building relationships, communication with parents, collaboration, and focusing on professional development and reflection.

It’s not easy to naturally feel confident when preparing for your first classroom. All of your emotions and doubts start to creep in, but it’s important to remember that you have control over your mindset and actions. By taking in each of my ways to build your confidence as a new teacher and asking for help when you need it, you will feel success and confidence as you step into your new teacher role for the first time.
