Show Notes:

Preparing students for state standardized tests involves more than just reviewing content. It’s also about equipping them with the right mindset. That’s why we’re continuing our conversation on test preparation today! Before diving in, be sure to check out episode 338, where we covered test-taking strategies for English Language Arts, and episode 339, which focused on math-specific strategies. You won’t want to miss those!

Did you know that one of the most effective ways to prepare students for testing has nothing to do with academic content? While subject knowledge is important, it’s only part of the equation. In this episode, we’re shifting our focus to a crucial but often overlooked aspect of test prep: mindset.

Just like you, students may feel anxious or nervous about testing. It’s important to help them understand that these feelings are normal and to provide them with strategies to manage their emotions. By incorporating social-emotional learning and intentionally teaching these skills each day, you can foster confidence and resilience in your students.

Today, I’m sharing five powerful strategies to help students stay calm and develop a positive mindset ahead of state assessments. From daily affirmations and simple mindfulness activities to creating space for students to express their emotions, these techniques will help them perform at their best…without the added stress. Be sure to implement these mindset-focused tools not just during testing season, but throughout the entire school year!

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • Five strategies to help students stay calm and prepared in the weeks leading up to testing.
  • Why these strategies are perfect for assessment prep but how they can also be implemented throughout the year.
  • Eight affirmation examples that will transform your students’ confidence and effort.
  • Ways to seamlessly incorporate mindfulness exercises in your classroom that help your students manage their emotions more effectively.
  • The importance of creating opportunities for students to express their feelings and share what makes them nervous about taking a state assessment.

I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
