Classroom Management Hack: Lucky Ducks

Click the play bar below to listen to this week's show now:

Show Notes:

Today’s classroom management hack is a super cute one, and a great way of randomly selecting a student to answer questions. It's called Lucky Ducks. All you do is you go to the dollar store and buy a class set of plastic ducks.

Then, you print a student's name on each duck and toss them all together in a large bowl. Every time you ask a question, you can put your hand into the lucky duck bowl and pull out a duck. If that student's name is on the duck, they get to answer the question and are your “lucky duck”!

If you're teaching upper elementary, you might listen to this quick hack and think it's too babyish for upper elementary. However, I want to encourage you not to discount it too quickly. Kids always respond to whatever you do in the classroom based on the way that you introduce it, and upper elementary kids are just bigger kids. I think sometimes we forget that these kids still enjoy so many of the fun and playful and silly things that we like to do in lower elementary.

Lastly, I'm going to be opening our free R.E.A.D.Y. for School pop-up Facebook group again very soon. I'm also going to be hosting three more masterclasses to help you prepare for the school year. Inside the masterclass, we're going to talk about what they don't teach you in University about preparing for the school year and creating a classroom management plan that actually works.

You'll walk away from the masterclass with a step by step plan for how to prepare for the school year, as well as a one hour PD certificate just for showing up live and staying until the end! Plus, I have some other surprise goodies for you as well. You can get on my email list to be notified the moment we open registration for the masterclass.

I've realized, as I've started recording these hacks for you each week, that I can make it even easier for you to implement many of these ideas if you have access to simple, downloadable templates for many of the hacks.

So when you check out my Dr. Lori's Dollar Store, you're going to see that I'm creating very simple templates for you to grab and go with for only a dollar each. Then you can implement these hacks quickly and easily inside your classroom (as soon as tomorrow!).

I would love to know what you think about these classroom management hack mini episodes. It would mean so much to me if you would take a screenshot of this episode and tag me on Instagram @beginningteachertalk because I’d love to know – have you tried this hack in your classroom? How did it work for you?

Finally, if you need help with streamlining your classroom management right away, you also might want to check out my Chaos to Confidence Classroom Management System because classroom management isn’t just about tips and tricks or the latest trend. Instead, it’s about learning from someone who’s been where you are and figured it out.

I tested all my methods on MYSELF in my own classroom first over 10 years – because I’m not about to recommend ANYTHING that I haven’t personally seen work with kids firsthand.

It's never too late to make the changes you need to in order to get your classroom running the way that you want it to, and I'll show you how inside Chaos to Confidence and give you the resources you’ll need to make it happen.
