Classroom Management Hack: Level Up When You Have a Chatty Class

Show Notes:

Oh my gosh my friends, we did it! We’ve made it to episode number 200 of the Beginning Teacher Talk Podcast. I can't believe this day is finally here. When I first started this podcast three years ago, I couldn't have imagined that we would already be at more than 200,000 downloads.

So, I want to just take a moment to thank you. Thank you so much for listening, for downloading the podcast, and for staying with me if you've been a longtime listener.

I love today's quick classroom management hack and I know that you will love it too. It’s an amazing hack to use at the beginning of the school year to help your students all get on track towards building a fantastic classroom community in the first few weeks of school. It’s also a fantastic hack to use if you have an especially chatty class.

Here's how it works. First, you get a large clear mason jar, or any jar that you'd like to use. Then, brainstorm ideas with your class for different levels of rewards they might want to earn. Some reward ideas are:

  • 10 minutes of free time
  • Double recess
  • Seat swap
  • Class party

Then, you print these rewards on small labels, at different levels, evenly spaced on the jar. Put the smallest reward towards the bottom of the jar and the biggest reward at the top of the jar.

Students can earn small scoops of popcorn, beans, buttons - or whatever it is that they can put into the jar - when they follow the class rules or expectations. Each time they reach another level of the jar, the class earns the next reward.

So, you get to brainstorm new rewards at the end of the whole experience, and then just wash, rinse and repeat! What I love about this hack is that the rewards are largely student generated. It’s also so easy to swap out rewards.

If you love hearing about classroom management tips like this, don’t forget to sign up for my FREE masterclass on What They Don’t Teach You in College About Setting Up and Organizing Your Elementary Classroom, Preparing for the School Year, and Creating a Positive Classroom Management Plan That Works.

You'll walk away from the masterclass with a step by step plan for how to prepare for the school year, as well as a one hour PD certificate just for showing up live and staying until the end! Plus, I have some other surprise goodies for you as well. You can sign up for the masterclass here.

I've realized, as I've started recording these hacks for you each week, that I can make it even easier for you to implement many of these ideas if you have access to simple, downloadable templates for many of the hacks.

So when you check out my Dr. Lori's Dollar Store, you're going to see that I'm creating very simple templates for you to grab and go with for only a dollar each. Then you can implement these hacks quickly and easily inside your classroom (as soon as tomorrow!).

I would love to know what you think about these classroom management hack mini episodes. It would mean so much to me if you would take a screenshot of this episode and tag me on Instagram @beginningteachertalk because I’d love to know – have you tried this hack in your classroom? How did it work for you?

Finally, if you need help with streamlining your classroom management right away, you also might want to check out my Chaos to Confidence Classroom Management System because classroom management isn’t just about tips and tricks or the latest trend. Instead, it’s about learning from someone who’s been where you are and figured it out.

I tested all my methods on MYSELF in my own classroom first over 10 years – because I’m not about to recommend ANYTHING that I haven’t personally seen work with kids firsthand.

It's never too late to make the changes you need to in order to get your classroom running the way that you want it to, and I'll show you how inside Chaos to Confidence and give you the resources you’ll need to make it happen.
