Show Notes:

Starting your first year of teaching is so exciting! You’ve spent four years working towards your degree, completing student teaching, and now you finally have your own classroom. But even with all this excitement you’re feeling, thoughts of imposter syndrome can start to creep in.

We’ve learned that imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern that makes us doubt our skills, accomplishments, and talents. This is why despite working so hard for this career, you begin to believe you don’t deserve your achievements and feel unqualified in your role as a teacher. You start putting pressure on yourself to be perfect and fear making any mistakes.

Instead of letting go of the immense amount of pressure you feel, you tend to go in the opposite direction. You try to compensate for feeling incompetent by working longer hours and comparing yourself to other experienced teachers, or even worse, other beginning teachers who you think have it all together.

But don’t worry, there are ways to manage imposter syndrome as a new teacher. From my own personal experience being a beginning teacher, I learned to take the pressure off of being perfect and instead embraced my new journey ahead. It’s inevitable that you’re going to make mistakes. So in today’s episode, I’m sharing some practical tools that help you overcome and get relief from imposter syndrome as a new teacher. These tools take practice and time, but will give you the confidence you need as a beginning teacher.

The first year of teaching is incredibly challenging, but imposter syndrome isn’t uncommon and doesn’t define your capabilities as an educator.
