Show Notes:

As teachers, do you have struggles in your classroom that keep you up at night? Are you so worried about how you’re going to handle certain situations that you’re constantly stressing about it? Unfortunately, for all teachers, we experience some form of this each year. For me, it was how to handle the challenging behaviors of my students.

When interacting with students all day, it’s the defiance, disruptions, and attention seeking behaviors that teachers tend to struggle with the most. So in today’s episode, I’m discussing the root causes of those challenging behaviors and practical strategies so you can address behavioral struggles during your school day. Additionally, knowing that all behaviors are a form of communication helps teachers identify a student’s unmet need or is in emotional distress. Furthermore, this also allows teachers to approach the behavior with empathy and respond supportively.

With each challenging behavior discussed, there’s practical strategies and ideas you can try to de-escalate the behavior or prevent it from happening. Being proactive with your classroom management, setting up clear and consistent expectations, and building student relationships and classroom culture with positive reinforcement are all strategies teachers can implement in their classroom to address challenging behaviors. In the end, it comes back to giving students the tools, skills, and support in the areas they have deficits.

Meeting the demands of teaching is already stressful, but when you add in challenging behaviors of students, your stress level can go through the roof. When dealing with those behaviors, my goal is to help you maintain and establish a calm and supportive environment and practice emotional regulation in the midst of what feels like chaos by understanding the root causes and implementing practical strategies.

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • The root causes of challenging behaviors and why it’s a form of communication for students
  • Common triggers of challenging behaviors and ways to handle those triggers in the classroom
  • Practical strategies you can use to prevent behaviors and how to have a proactive classroom management system
  • Why teaching students skills and giving them the tools they need to feel supported is important and how focusing on the positive impacts student behaviors
