Classroom Management Hack: Fantastic Hallway Behavior

Show Notes:

I don't know if you're anything like me, but when I first started teaching, it seems like my class was always the worst behaved. 🀦‍♀️

When we were outside of the classroom, it was seriously embarrassing. Whenever we lined up to head to the gym, or to music, or the library, I would always have this sick feeling in my stomach.

I was constantly worried that my students were going to be loud in the hallway (again) and I would get those snarky looks from other teachers as my class walked by.

You know the looks that I’m talking about!

If you've gone through this yourself, and just don't know what to do to get your kids to be quiet in the hallway, then you’re going to love this hack. It’s going to give you a fun and positive way to finally get that fantastic hallway behavior you’ve always wanted.

When students are lined up and they're ready to leave a classroom, you say the words “game on”. It's boys versus girls, or it's team one and team two. Each time someone talks, the other team gets a point.

You keep a running total on a mini whiteboard that you take with you when you leave the classroom. Then, at the end of the week, the team with the most points gets some kind of a small treat.

Another variation of this hack is to play a version of “beat the teacher” in the halls. So, when you say the words “game on”, on your whiteboard you will write “teacher” on one side and “the class” on the other side.

Then, it’s the same idea where you pause every little while in the hallway and either give the students a tally mark if they’ve been quiet, or give yourself a tally mark if they start chatting! At the end of the week, if the students have more points than you do, they get some kind of a treat before they leave for the weekend.

Either variation is so easy to do! Before you know it, you’ll have the very best behaved class in the hallways.

I hope that you've signed up for my masterclass, Four Secrets to Success in Your First Years of Teaching. We're going to talk all about what you can do this summer to ensure that you're ready for the school year.

When you sign up for the masterclass, you’re going to get some amazing goodies for showing up live, including a one hour PD certificate and free resources that you can use in the first week of the school year. You’ll also get access to a private pop up group on Facebook, where I'm giving away daily prizes of books that you can use in your classroom in the first weeks of school. Best of all, you can be entered to win our grand prize of a MacBook Air computer. Yes, seriously! You really don't want to miss it.

I've realized, as I've started recording these hacks for you each week, that I can make it even easier for you to implement many of these ideas if you have access to simple, downloadable templates for many of the hacks.

So when you check out my Dr. Lori's Dollar Store, you're going to see that I'm creating very simple templates for you to grab and go with for only a dollar each. Then you can implement these hacks quickly and easily inside your classroom (as soon as tomorrow!).

I would love to know what you think about these classroom management hack mini episodes. It would mean so much to me if you would take a screenshot of this episode and tag me on Instagram @beginningteachertalk because I’d love to know – have you tried this hack in your classroom? How did it work for you?

Finally, if you need help with streamlining your classroom management right away, you also might want to check out my Chaos to Confidence Classroom Management System because classroom management isn’t just about tips and tricks or the latest trend. Instead, it’s about learning from someone who’s been where you are and figured it out.

I tested all my methods on MYSELF in my own classroom first over 10 years – because I’m not about to recommend ANYTHING that I haven’t personally seen work with kids firsthand.

It's never too late to make the changes you need to in order to get your classroom running the way that you want it to, and I'll show you how inside Chaos to Confidence and give you the resources you’ll need to make it happen.
