10 Simple & Easy Exit Ticket Ideas for Elementary Teachers

You are only one person leading a class of 20-30 students. Because of this, it can be really difficult to get a grasp on which specific skills each individual student understands, and which ones they need more teaching on. How can you ensure that some students aren’t falling behind in their understanding of the concept that you’re teaching? Exit tickets just may be your answer!

Exit tickets measure how well your students understand specific concepts as you teach them inside your classroom. They are a very valuable teacher tool because they are quick to implement, allow you to easily scan the results, and can be done with any subject at any time during the day. 

If you’ve never used exit tickets before, they are typically just a very small sheet of paper with questions that each student answers individually at the end of a lesson. They aren’t meant to be formally graded. Instead, it is a formative assessment that you use to help your students improve. 

When you use exit tickets, you get in-the-moment-feedback that tells you if a student understands what was taught or needs more direct instruction with that specific skill or topic. This quick snapshot of understanding is so important because if we’re not aware of where our students are in their learning, it can create gaps. These gaps will lead to a lot of frustration for us as teachers and for our students because we aren’t sure where they began struggling with a concept, which will interfere with their understanding moving forward. 

While an exit ticket can be simply you posing a question, and students answering it on a piece of paper, there are other creative ways to use them.
