Show Notes:
Amazing classroom management starts on the very first day of school. We all know building genuine relationships, focusing on the positive, and consistently reinforcing natural consequences is key to effective classroom management. But the problem so many new teachers run into is that nobody shows us how to do these things so we struggle to figure it out on our own when we get into the classroom.
If you just aren’t sure how to focus on the positives or what enforcing natural consequences in the classroom looks like, you are not alone! Most universities don’t have time to teach the how-to of effective classroom management. And if they do cover it, they don’t teach the level of detail needed to truly understand how to effectively do everything that is involved in classroom management.
I want to help you set yourself (and your students) up for success starting on the first day of school. I have learned that the key to having a self-running classroom is to carefully teach your expectations and model them for your students at the beginning of the school year.
Your rules, expectations, and routines will be different from your students' last teacher. They won’t walk into your classroom knowing how to do everything you expect them to do and you can’t expect them to.
So how can you effectively teach your students your expectations while still building a positive and supportive classroom community? I don’t want you to struggle figuring this out on your own! In this episode, I am breaking down how I teach one specific routine inside my classroom, what to do when a student tests you, and the importance of consistency in praising the positive and enforcing natural consequences starting on day one.
If you would like some help getting started in a fresh and positive way this school year, be sure to sign up for my FREE masterclass! In this masterclass, I share my four proven steps to help you set up and organize your classroom and create a classroom management system that actually works so you can feel prepared for the first day of school. Let’s get you feeling excited and confident for the school year! I can’t wait to see you there.
I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
