When 4 Students Constantly Disrupt Your Lesson

Show Notes:

The challenges that teachers face every day are endless. Sometimes those challenges are big, whole class disruptions, while other times they’re small but throw off the rhythm of your lesson and class. While these constant interruptions seem minor, they can actually be really hard to manage. So if this is happening in your classroom, what can you do about it?

When disruptions occur with a small group of students, the way you handle the situation is completely different than with whole class disruptions. Instead of punishing every student, I’m going to provide you with strategies that will turn those individual interruptions back into focused work. With my five step process, you will walk away with techniques that you can use to manage those behaviors that will ultimately bring more peace to your classroom.

With each of the five steps that I share, they guide you into thinking about these constant interruptions from start to finish. I first have you identify the root cause of the behavior, provide examples of strategies to replace the behavior, and then how to reinforce the behavior you do want. Each step is so important because it allows you to properly address the behavior and accurately correct it with strategies specific to the behavior shown.

Encountering behavior issues while teaching a lesson, transitioning to an activity, or walking down the hallway disrupts the flow and concentration of your students, no matter how minor the disruption. If you’re looking to change the constant interruptions in your classroom, remember it takes time and patience. But with the implementation of the practical strategies and techniques I share with you today, you can turn those behavior disruptions into focused work in your classroom.

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • A five step process for managing constant interruptions caused by a small group of students
  • Why these disruptions seem harmless but actually disrupt the flow and rhythm of your lessons and students over time
  • Ways to assess whether the disruptions are intentional or a form of a bigger issue and strategies to help manage them
  • Examples that positively reinforce behaviors expectations and knowing when to engage your class in calming routines or movement brain breaks
