What to Do When You Have a Chatty Class: Part One

After being in the classroom for a few weeks now, you have probably already figured out what concepts you need to review and skills your students excel in, as well as their different personality traits. Learning how to manage the personality of your class and students can sometimes be a challenge, especially when they’re considered chatty. 

When hearing that a teacher has a chatty class, there’s automatically negative connotations surrounding it. A chatty class infers a lot of distractions and disruptions, students struggling to grasp and follow concepts, and even wasted instructional time. However, having chatty students can also have positive impacts such as engagement with peers, excitement for learning, and develops communication skills. 

With those two different ideas in mind, having a chatty class can definitely be a challenge, but also viewed as a blessing. So, if you have already learned that’s your class personality, it’s best to reframe your thinking to reflect a more positive outlook. In order to do so, implement strategic strategies that redirect their talkative behavior towards productivity. In today’s episode, I’m sharing 15 strategies to use with your students that mitigate any potential negative impacts while embracing the positive aspects of a chatty class.

In part one of learning how to manage a chatty class, these strategies are tools that channel students' behavior into responsibility, structure, and creating a collaborative atmosphere. I also share how implementing structured time for students to freely talk amongst their peers correlates with more focused instructional time.
