With each new episode in this new teacher series, I love unpacking the ins and outs and small details that help run and streamline a classroom. Many of the topics we’re discussing aren’t taught in your educational classrooms but are really lessons learned as you continue to teach and run your own classroom. That, along with many other reasons, is why I do these series every spring for beginning teachers who just graduated or new teachers wanting to learn new skills and tricks for the classroom.

One of the things I was nervous about when I got into my own classroom was how to deal with and manage the challenging behaviors of students. I knew it was inevitable, but I was unsure how to effectively deal with those behaviors, let alone know how to prevent them from happening. So, in part four of this series, I’m discussing the four ways to prevent challenging behavior in your elementary classroom. And what’s great about this topic is it’s something new teachers want to know, but also current teachers who want to finish the year strong.

What I learned over the years is that there are very strategic things we can do when setting up our classroom, especially in a way that’s intentional for setting students and ourselves up for success. By thinking through your classroom management system and how to address challenging behaviors, you’re doing just that. The four ways I share for preventing challenging behavior require you to consider scenarios and intentional ways to establish clear expectations, focus on positive habits in your students, build classroom community, and natural consequences.

Knowing how to handle challenging behaviors, especially as a new and beginning teacher, can be terrifying. But implementing my four simple ways for preventing them before they even happen will give you the ability to deal with them with less stress. After listening to this episode, check off that new teacher worry and handle challenging behaviors like a pro!
