Understanding ADHD: 10 Strategies for Classroom Management

We spend a lot of time with our students, especially if you’re an elementary teacher, since you’re with them all day. As a result, you get to know them extremely well! You begin to notice their habits, behaviors, personalities, and any signs that may lead to a specific academic diagnosis. One of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I can guarantee you that at least one, if not more, of your students has this, whether they’re diagnosed or not.

Since ADHD is so prevalent in children, it’s important to have an understanding of it and identify practical strategies that help support and manage students with it in your classroom. A child’s elementary years are incredibly formative years for their academic journey, which is why knowing and implementing effective strategies early help make them successful and give them a foundation for future success.

As teachers, we’re not responsible for diagnosing a child with ADHD, but sometimes we are the first to notice and identify early warning signs. So if you do notice some of these behaviors, there are some strategies you can implement in your classroom to help support students who may have ADHD. In today’s episode, I’m sharing my most effective strategies that help manage and support students with ADHD. Additionally, I provide red flags for ADHD in the classroom that you should be aware of. 

Having inattentive students in your class can lead to classroom management challenges, but knowing the right strategies to use can give your students the tools they need for academic success. By implementing these strategies, you’ll also be prepared to have a greater and more compassionate understanding of your students.
